The two-week MACD of <a href=\"\/coins\/bitcoin\">bitcoin<\/a> crossed into a buy signal on Apr. 1st, the first time since May 11th, 2015, the bottom of the market before it exploded in 2016-2017.<\/p>\n<p>Technical analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/eric-thies\/\">Eric Thies<\/a> recently tweeted on Apr. 16 his organization entered into a position on bitcoin when the price was $4,000. His reasoning: bullish signals from two-week MACD.<\/p>\n<p>Moving average convergence divergence, or MACD, is a trading indicator that shows the relationship between two moving averages of an asset\u2019s price.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The 2W MACD has crossed in a buy signal on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24BTC&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$BTC<\/a>. We opened @ approx $4k. <\/p>\n<p>The last time it happened? May 2015. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bitcoin?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Bitcoin<\/a> opened around $240. <\/p>\n<p>We can still drop in accumulation, but the bottom is in &#39;folks. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5X7Dc9qc5S\">pic.twitter.com\/5X7Dc9qc5S<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Crypto Thies (@KingThies) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KingThies\/status\/1118290798628327425?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 16, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding MACD<\/h2>\n<p>The MACD indicator is calculated using two exponential moving averages (EMAs) which place greater weight on the most recent data, compared to a simple moving average (SMA) which applies an equal weight to all price data over a period.<\/p>\n<p>Then, a moving average (EMA) of MACD is taken to produce a \u201csignal line,\u201d which can signal buy and sells. Investopedia elaborates on a few of the issues of using MACD as a signal for trend reversals\u2014when the market goes from bearish to bullish or vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>MACD sometimes signals a trend reversal and then no reversal happens; other times, it doesn\u2019t forecast a reversal. In other words, the indicator produces many false positives.<\/p>\n<p>False positives for MACD can often occur when the price of an asset moves sideways. Such movement will cause the MACD to equalize from previous extremes.
