{"id":125480,"date":"2020-02-14T02:56:10","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T02:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=125480"},"modified":"2020-02-14T02:58:18","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T02:58:18","slug":"the-doj-just-busted-a-massive-money-laundering-scheme-and-its-bad-for-bitcoin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/the-doj-just-busted-a-massive-money-laundering-scheme-and-its-bad-for-bitcoin\/","title":{"rendered":"The DOJ just busted a massive money laundering scheme, and it\u2019s bad for Bitcoin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The growth of Bitcoin and the crypto market has long been inhibited due to its perceived ties to the dark web and the criminal underworld, a perception that is primarily rooted in the technology\u2019s genesis as a payment method on dark web marketplaces.<\/p>\n<p>Although this narrative has largely dissolved in recent years, it is important to note that traces of it still remain amongst governments and retail investors, which has been slowing the technology\u2019s widespread adoption.<\/p>\n<p>This is emblematic while looking at the White House\u2019s recent 2021 fiscal budget, which specifically names cryptocurrency-related crime as one thing they intend to crack down on in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Further bolstering this narrative is the recent news regarding a stunning $300 million money laundering scheme that was just busted by the Department of Justice, which may serve as the poster child for the government\u2019s growing case against Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>DOJ conducts major Bitcoin money laundering takedown <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Recently, news broke that the US Department of Justice charged an Ohio-based man with laundering over $300 million by utilizing Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>The money-laundering scheme, which has been described as a \u201ctumbling\u201d operation, was run by Larry Harmon, who put together an advanced money laundering operation deemed \u201cHelix\u201d that helped clean money that was used for transactions on an underground marketplace called AlphaBay.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of this so-called Bitcoin \u201cmixer\u201d service was to mask the wallet addresses associated with specific transactions, with BTC entering a cumulative wallet before being sent to the target wallet \u2013 minus a fee.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski of the Justice Department\u2019s Criminal Division spoke about Helix in the indictment\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/ohio-resident-charged-operating-darknet-based-bitcoin-mixer-which-laundered-over-300-million\">press release<\/a>, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHelix allegedly laundered hundreds of millions of dollars of illicit narcotics proceeds and other criminal profits for Darknet users around the globe\u2026This indictment underscores that seeking to obscure virtual currency transactions in this way is a crime, and that the Department can and will ensure that such crime doesn\u2019t pay.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>The government\u2019s case against BTC grows<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the newly released White House 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/budget_fy21.pdf\">fiscal budget<\/a>, the term \u201ccryptocurrency\u201d is mentioned twice, with the technology being directly linked to terrorism financing and other criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the budget also notes that the White House intends to move the Secret Service back underneath the Treasury Department so that it can better police Bitcoin and the crypto industry.<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear as to whether or not the Secret Service\u2019s involvement within the crypto markets would be a net positive or negative, it is highly probable that the recent DOJ Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/london-police-educated-on-cryptocurrencies-amidst-money-laundering-concerns\/\">money laundering<\/a> bust will be an impetus for the government to get further involved within the markets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The growth of Bitcoin and the crypto market has long been inhibited due to its perceived ties to the dark web and the criminal underworld, a perception that is primarily rooted in the technology\u2019s genesis as a payment method on dark web marketplaces.
