All sub-ordinate offices and municipal administrators have been directed to \u201cguide\u201d miners to close up shop.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Financial Administrative of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Sichuan?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Sichuan<\/a> providence of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/China?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#China<\/a> has issued a notice to its subordinate offices ordering them to \u201cguide mining entities to end their mining activities in an orderly manner\u201d. The province accounts for about 9.66% of the global <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/mining?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#mining<\/a> power. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mVtihdf9px\">pic.twitter.com\/mVtihdf9px<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PANews (@PANewsOfficial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PANewsOfficial\/status\/1263677038755528705?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Sichuan\u2019s mountainous region, cheap electricity, access to competent workers, and naturally cool climate makes it a hotbed for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency miners. Branch offices of mining giants Bitmain and AntPool are located in the region, with others.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, 9.66 percent of all Bitcoin hash rate is generated from the region, if the tweet is considered. A look at <a href=\"https:\/\/btc.com\/stats\/pool?pool_mode=week\">BTC.com\u2019s mining page<\/a> confirms the claim. Six of the top ten miners are located in China, with some presumably in Sichuan:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-134334\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/poolmining.png\" alt=\"Bitcoin hash rate\" width=\"749\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/poolmining.png 749w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/poolmining-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Data from China is notoriously difficult to get. Still, with the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/youngjoseph\/2019\/12\/12\/new-report-shows-china-dominates-bitcoin-mining-is-this-a-sign-of-worry\/\">multiple reports<\/a>, projections can help to predict what the new Sichuan directive could mean for Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p><i>PANews<\/i>, an Asia-focussed blockchain research firm, cited the below <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PANewsOfficial\/status\/1263677424975429632\">in a tweet<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_134332\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-134332\" style=\"width: 1141px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-134332\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EYl7zEoU0AAaW5E.png\" alt=\"miners in sichuan\" width=\"1141\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EYl7zEoU0AAaW5E.png 1141w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EYl7zEoU0AAaW5E-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EYl7zEoU0AAaW5E-1024x585.png 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EYl7zEoU0AAaW5E-768x439.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1141px) 100vw, 1141px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-134332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Source: PANews)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Xinjiang, in Northwest China, comes out on top. The province is a vast region of deserts and mountainous land and provides an optimal zone for miners. 35 percent of the Bitcoin hash rate seems to originate from the region.<\/p>\n<p>Cities like Beijing and Zhejiang also make an appearance on the list. Electricity and labor are both expensive in the two regions, as reflected on their low overall hashrate share.<\/p>\n<p>However, Sichuan\u2019s omission won\u2019t necessarily mean miners in the U.S. or Europe can now increase their share. Xinjiang, Mongolia, and Yunnan are plush with Sichuan-like conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Technical know-how, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/bitcoin-mining-china-ban-crypto-cryptocurrency-wechat\">low cost of labor<\/a>, and sheer dominance in the mining space are all factors contributing to China\u2019s prominence in the mining space, and may not be easily superseded.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, the country is pushing for <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/xi-jinping-says-blockchain-could-aid-social-governance\/\">blockchain regulation<\/a>, investment, research, and even infrastructure. This, presumably, means cryptocurrencies may be subject to similar regulation and state-backed policies.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, China continues to move ahead with its digital currency project, which as per a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/new-leaked-images-chinas-national-crypto-pilot-is-bigger-than-first-thought\/\">CryptoSlate analysis<\/a>, might be bigger than previously imagined.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a step forward and a leap backward for China\u2019s mining industry.
