{"id":175564,"date":"2020-11-09T12:10:49","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T12:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=175564"},"modified":"2026-06-12T08:34:02","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T07:34:02","slug":"crypto-bank-cred-files-for-bankruptcy-after-alleged-multimillion-fraud-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-bank-cred-files-for-bankruptcy-after-alleged-multimillion-fraud-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto &#8220;bank&#8221; Cred files for bankruptcy after alleged multimillion fraud case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto lending firm <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/credit-suisse\/\">Cred<\/a> filed for a voluntary Chapter 11 case in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware to explore strategic alternatives, including, without limitation, the restructuring of its balance sheet or the sale of its business as a going concern, in a court-supervised process, it said in a release on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Customers want to hear updates regarding their funds, not personal info<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CryptoBruch (@CryptoBruch) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CryptoBruch\/status\/1322297253038469121?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 30, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cred claims to serve thousands of customers in over 100 countries and will now aim to use the Chapter 11 process in its attempt to maximize the value of its platform for its creditors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm has also appointed a new Independent Director to its Board, Grant Lyon, who will also serve as Chair of the Restructuring Committee for the Company during the Chapter 11 process, it said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The curtains come down<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move came days after allegations of a multi-million fraud at Cred, which resulted in the firm ceasing all withdrawals, came to light last week, as CryptoSlate <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/as-crypto-lending-app-cred-suspends-withdrawals-uphold-terminates-its-contract\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US-based lending service was launched in 2018 to huge acclaim at the time. Cred offered a custodial solution for crypto lending, burrowing, and used its own technology to provide business and retail with credit and to allow its customers to earn a yield on more than 30 crypto and fiat currencies through its partner network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the firm\u2019s since fallen on hard times. Documents show that while Cred\u2019s total assets under management are an estimated $50-$100 million, the firm\u2019s liabilities are <\/span><b>above<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $100 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, when developments of funds being misplaced came to light, US fintech app Uphold swiftly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/as-crypto-lending-app-cred-suspends-withdrawals-uphold-terminates-its-contract\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>moved to end its relationship<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the lender after it failed to receive a promising response on Cred\u2019s situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We just want to know that our funds are safe. The extent of any problem at Cred was not, and is not, clear to us,\u201d an Uphold spokesperson told CryptoSlate at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spokesperson from Cred told CryptoSlate that the crypto service was still in the process of assessing the business impact of a fraud incident in consultation with its Counsel and specialists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Better than a bank?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the Chapter 11 filing, Cred maintains that all rumors about it being hacked were fabricated. \u201cNo Cred systems, customer accounts, or customer information have been compromised,\u201d a spokesperson <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/as-crypto-lending-app-cred-suspends-withdrawals-uphold-terminates-its-contract\/\">stated in an earlier mail<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cred did not respond to CryptoSlate\u2019s queries about the bankruptcy at press time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the firm continues to state on its homepage, \u201cThank goodness Cred is not a bank.\u00a0 We can leverage the blockchain to do everything a bank does but better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But leveraging a blockchain won\u2019t help Cred this time.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto lending firm Cred filed for a voluntary Chapter 11 case in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware to explore strategic alternatives, including, without limitation, the restructuring of its balance sheet or the sale of its business as a going concern, in a court-supervised process, it said in a release on [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":65,"featured_media":130932,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[76747,77901,60793],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.9 (Yoast SEO v21.9.1) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Crypto &quot;bank&quot;
