But one senator says the whole thing could have been avoided if blockchain technology was implemented.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Blockchain fixes this<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator Cynthia Lummis said yesterday that blockchain technology could help fix the rampant stock manipulation that occurs in financial markets, as per a tweet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lummis represents the people of Wyoming in the United States Senate and has been in office since this month. She was earlier the representative at large for the district of Wyoming from 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s now championing for blockchain technology to fight corruption. In a tweet yesterday, Lummis said, \u201cWhat happened with #GameStop this week is basically unprecedented. At one point, there were 38% MORE outstanding claims to GameStop stock than stock that actually existed! Good news: we can fix this with #blockchain\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lummis went on to say that if shares of the stock were issued on a blockchain,\u00a0 the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MainStreet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (read: retail) investors would own their own shares of stock (currently, just a claim on your broker). The tech would also make Wall Street more efficient while regulators like the US SEC could more accurately monitor the market, she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If shares of stock were issued on a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/blockchain?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#blockchain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MainStreet?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MainStreet<\/a> investors would own their own shares of stock (currently, just a claim on your broker), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WallStreet?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WallStreet<\/a> can be more efficient and regulators like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SEC_News?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SEC_News<\/a> can more accurately monitor the market.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Senator Cynthia Lummis (@SenLummis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenLummis\/status\/1354951252786950148?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 29, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><b>Politicians extend their support<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statements came as retail trading app Robinhood stopped the purchase of GameStop (GME) shares yesterday, as retail traders \u2014 a majority from Reddit forum WallStreetBets \u2014 drove prices up to the $450 mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That price surge is said to have caused implications for firms like Robinhood and other \u201cshorters,\u201d \u2014 or firms that bet against the rising prices for GME for a profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in a seeming case of corruption, Robinhood blocked the purchase of shares and drove prices momentarily down, a move that was later slammed by politicians, business leaders, and much of the retail trading industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These included politicians like US Representative of New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who said the public deserved to know about Robinhood\u2019s decision to \u201cblock retail investors from purchasing stock while hedge funds are freely able to trade the stock as they see fit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>We now need to know more about <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobinhoodApp?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RobinhoodApp<\/a>\u2019s decision to block retail investors from purchasing stock while hedge funds are freely able to trade the stock as they see fit.<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the Financial Services Cmte, I\u2019d support a hearing if necessary. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4Qyrolgzyt\">https:\/\/t.co\/4Qyrolgzyt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1354830697459032066?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the furor has led many to state on Twitter that the general public was likely to pay more attention to the crypto space now that the corruption and lack of support for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small guy <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were being gradually exposed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here\u2019s to hoping that they come for adoption, not for the pumps.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The GameStonk hit the $450 price level yesterday before corrupt firms clamped down on its trading.
