{"id":189646,"date":"2021-05-07T20:00:44","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T19:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=189646"},"modified":"2021-05-07T16:57:25","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T15:57:25","slug":"citibank-is-building-a-crypto-trading-and-custody-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/citibank-is-building-a-crypto-trading-and-custody-service\/","title":{"rendered":"American institution Citibank is building a crypto trading and custody service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American multinational investment bank Citigroup is reportedly developing crypto-related services such as trading, custody, and financing due to rapidly growing interest from clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d90ed3bf-2c8d-46c9-98b7-67859f6598e5\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report published today, the bank hasn\u2019t yet decided when\u2014if ever\u2014it will actually offer its clients crypto services but is preparing for such eventuality nevertheless.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Clients' interest in crypto grows<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are different options from our perspective and we are considering where we can best service clients. This is not going to be a prop-trading effort,\u201d Itay Tuchman, Citi\u2019s global head of foreign exchange, told the outlet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that whatever the final decision will be, the bank is not planning to get involved in proprietary trading\u2014in which financial institutions trade assets on their own accounts. However, trading and custody services are already in the works, Tuchman noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He explained that since August 2020, the bank has been witnessing a \u201cvery rapid\u201d growth of interest in cryptocurrencies among its clients, including large investment companies. They have reportedly been asking Citi for all manners of crypto-related services, from research to trading of certain coins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>No FOMO<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, the bank has decided to take a very careful and deliberate approach to the emerging market to avoid any unnecessary risks and regulatory hurdles, Tuchman pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t do anything that\u2019s not safe and sound. We will jump in when we are confident that we can build something that benefits clients and that regulators can support,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, Citi is not in any rush to jump on the crypto hype train as soon as possible, Tuchman stressed, but would rather prepare for the right moment to enter the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t have any FOMO because I believe that crypto is here to stay and that we are just at the very beginning of the market. This isn\u2019t a space race. There is room for more than just one flag,\u201d he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CryptoSlate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported, Citi is just the latest traditional finance institution to turn its sights to cryptocurrencies. For example, America\u2019s oldest bank BNY Mellon announced in February that it would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/americas-oldest-bank-bny-mellon-follows-suit-by-introducing-bitcoin-custodial-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hold, transfer, and issue cryptocurrencies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its clients.
