{"id":191819,"date":"2021-05-31T11:14:38","date_gmt":"2021-05-31T10:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=191819"},"modified":"2021-05-31T11:14:38","modified_gmt":"2021-05-31T10:14:38","slug":"flash-loan-attack-on-defi-platform-belt-finance-sees-6-2-million-gone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/flash-loan-attack-on-defi-platform-belt-finance-sees-6-2-million-gone\/","title":{"rendered":"Flash loan attack on DeFi platform &#8216;Belt Finance&#8217; sees $6.2 million gone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belt Finance, a decentralized finance (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cryptos\/defi\/\">DeFi<\/a>) platform based on smart contract network Binance Smart Chain (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-smart-chain-defi-project-burgerswap-hacked-for-7-million\/\">BSC<\/a>), became the latest project to fall victim to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/press-releases\/orbs-integrates-with-chainlink-to-create-flash-loan-proof-single-sided-farming-protocol\/\">flash loan<\/a> attack, losing over $6.2 million worth of tokens in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOn May 29, 2021, a flash loan attack was initiated on the BSC 4Belt (USDT\/USDC\/BUSD\/DAI) pool. The attacker created a smart contract that used PancakeSwap for flash loans and exploited our beltBUSD pool and its underlying strategy protocols and then proceeded to execute the contract 8 times for a total profit of 6,234,753 BUSD,\u201d Belt Finance wrote in a post mortem <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/belt-finance\/may-29-incident-report-865d20cc46ca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yesterday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ We apologize for the wait, but we wanted to make this right. <\/p>\n<p>Here is the link to our incident report: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/l1hmAlMGbM\">https:\/\/t.co\/l1hmAlMGbM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Belt Finance (@BELT_Finance) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BELT_Finance\/status\/1399014408857133061?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 30, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Another DeFi gone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flash loan exploits are becoming increasingly prevalent in the DeFi space lately. Using this vector of attack, hackers usually take out massive loans on other platforms and use these funds to manipulate token prices on projects they are targeting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This effectively allows the attackers to quickly and illicitly obtain substantial amounts of \u201cextra\u201d money while still being able to repay the loan afterward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Belt Finance, only two of its liquidity pools were affected\u2014beltBUSD and 4Belt\u2014whose users lost 21.36% and 5.51% of funds, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the attack, deposits and withdrawals from the affected pools were suspended for 48 hours. At press time, Belt Finance developers have reported that they identified and successfully patched the exploit that enabled the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are doing everything we can to ensure that nothing like this will ever take place again. We are also in the process of creating a compensation plan for our users. Our users and their assets are important to us, and while this attack is something we had not foreseen, we do not want this to affect our users in any negative way,\u201d the developers stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Flash loan attacks intensify<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The compensation plan is expected to be published on June 1. Meanwhile, Belt Finance\u2019s team also reassured users that it has not sold its tokens and \u201cthis can be verified through the address plainly posted in our telegram group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs attacks on the BSC ecosystem are becoming more and more common, this is fast becoming a concern for all members of the BSC community. We hope the BSC community can work together to address these issues and the causes that enable such attacks,\u201d Belt Finance noted, concluding, \u201cWe will make this right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CryptoSlate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported, several other BSC-based DeFi platforms have also been \u201cflash loaned\u201d recently. Just a few days ago, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-smart-chain-defi-project-burgerswap-hacked-for-7-million\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BurgerSwap lost over $7.2 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worth of BNB, ETH, BURGER, and other tokens to a similar exploit.
