But according to sentiment tracking firm <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/elon-musks-reputation-hits-low-on-twitter-after-attacking-bitcoin-212836943.html\">Awario<\/a>, public opinion has since swung the other way.<\/p>\n<p>This change of heart comes following Musk's announcement that Tesla would no longer accept Bitcoin as payment for its vehicles. The now infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1392602041025843203\">tweet<\/a> gave an environmental justification for the action.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tesla & Bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YSswJmVZhP\">pic.twitter.com\/YSswJmVZhP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1392602041025843203?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Many considered this as an attack on the leading cryptocurrency. As such, it's not surprising that attitudes towards the eccentric billionaire have sunk to a new low. But just how bad has it become?<\/p>\n<h2>Awario's findings<\/h2>\n<p>Data from <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/elon-musks-reputation-hits-low-on-twitter-after-attacking-bitcoin-212836943.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Awario\" data-rapid_p=\"46\" data-v9y=\"1\">Awario<\/a> shows tweets of a positive opinion on Musk reached a new low last month. This corresponded with his U-turn on Bitcoin and the subsequent crash in its price.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of this year, tweets in favor and against Musk were level pegging in number. But by May, the ratio of positive-to-negative sentiment dipped by about a quarter hitting its lowest proportion since October 2020, which was when Awario first began tracking this metric.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@elonmusk<\/a>\u2019s positive\/negative sentiment on Twitter has hit a new low since he announced Tesla would no longer accept <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/bitcoin?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bitcoin<\/a> for payment. The reversal sparked a 35% decline in the price of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?q=%24BTC&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$BTC<\/a> & a wave of negative tweets<\/p>\n<p>My latest with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AwarioApp?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AwarioApp<\/a> data: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bFE24iYhIQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/bFE24iYhIQ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RNqFuuGGyg\">pic.twitter.com\/RNqFuuGGyg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Zack Guzm\u00e1n (@zGuz) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zGuz\/status\/1400213148850966530?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Back then, neutral tweets about Musk formed the biggest category, accounting for 66% of tweets. This was followed by negative tweets at 19.2%, and positive tweets bringing up the rear at 14.9%.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the situation, <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/elon-musks-reputation-hits-low-on-twitter-after-attacking-bitcoin-212836943.html\">Ross Gerber<\/a>, the CEO of investment firm Gerber Kawasaki, warned that manipulating markets and playing with people's money is a risky strategy for Musk to take.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I think it's a very dangerous area for Elon to get in when he's causing people losses like he did the other day and it turns people against him and ultimately Tesla,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h2>Okung tells Musk to stay in his lane<\/h2>\n<p>Gerber wasn't the only one to offer Musk advice. Former offensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers, Russell Okung launched a billboard campaign featuring himself, suggesting Musk keep out of Bitcoin and focus on space instead.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign will run for two weeks in Miami, Florida to coincide with the Bitcoin 2021 conference being held in the city.
