Let's do a little bullish shakeout before we go higher,\u201d tweeted Lex Moskovski, CIO of Moskovski Capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Open interest reached an ATH.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#39;s do a little bullish shakeout before we go higher. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RGgQieEihE\">pic.twitter.com\/RGgQieEihE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Lex Moskovski \ud83d\udc19 (@mskvsk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mskvsk\/status\/1458160003668488197?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 9, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Liquidations,\u2019 for the uninitiated, occur when leveraged positions are automatically closed out by exchanges\/brokerages as a \u201csafety mechanism.\u201d Futures and margin traders\u2014who borrow capital from exchanges (usually in multiples) to place bigger bets\u2014put up a small collateral amount before placing a trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funding rates, on the other hand, are periodic payments to long or short traders based on the difference between the perpetual contract market and the spot price. Funding rates make the perpetual futures contract price close to the index price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher funding rates usually mean a move in the opposite direction, causing a cascade of liquidations on futures products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market was subject to such behavior this morning. As data from Coinfloor shows, nearly $500 million in \u2018longs\u2019\u2014or traders betting on higher prices\u2014saw liquidations. $235 million worth of these occurred on Binance, while $196 million occurred on OKEx.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin alone accounted for $200 million in liquidations, with Ethereum ($96 million), Polkadot ($37 million), and XRP ($27 million) following behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">172,378 traders were liquidated overall, with the single largest liquidation order happening on Bitmex\u2014an XBTUSD valued $10 million.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoin fell nearly $4,000 in a steep plunge this morning, taking with it the broader crypto market and causing over $500 million in \u2018long\u2019 liquidations.
