{"id":211913,"date":"2022-01-17T13:30:43","date_gmt":"2022-01-17T13:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=211913"},"modified":"2022-01-17T12:14:36","modified_gmt":"2022-01-17T12:14:36","slug":"pakistans-federal-agency-to-block-crypto-websites-report-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pakistans-federal-agency-to-block-crypto-websites-report-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan&#8217;s Federal Agency to block crypto websites, report finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to local news outlet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1669737\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pakistani Federal Investigations Agency's (FIA) director-general, Dr. Sanaullah Abbasi stated on Saturday that the agency will approach the Pakistan Telecommunication Agency (PTA) to block cryptocurrency websites to limit crypto fraud in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency calls to block crypto websites<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, FIA's general director Dr. Abbasi spoke to the media after holding a meeting with a team of senior officials at the state bank of Pakistan (SBP).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Abbasi further stated that the legal experts would also be approached to deal with issues related to cryptocurrencies including fraud and rampant money laundering cases that have grown in numbers since the launch of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1635507\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crypto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trading in Pakistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also stated, &#8220;Crypto has given a new dimension to fraud&#8221; and said that the agency will approach PTA in an attempt to block cryptocurrency websites to curb fraud and crypto money laundering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a report by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1669737\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the state bank of Pakistan has also issued an advisory to the general public to refrain from engaging in any virtual currencies, coin offerings-related activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistan has recently been embroiled in a mega crypto <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pakistan-to-investigate-crypto-exchange-binance-in-an-alleged-100-million-scam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that resulted in fraud of nearly $100 million. Speaking about the case, Dr. Abbasi stated, \u201cThe FIA has taken action over complaints of the people that have been cheated.&#8221; He also said that a probe has been launched concerning the issue and the officials have started to collect data to investigate the case in detail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also states that the country at present does not have a proper regulatory body or framework for crypto to comply with global anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing requirements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite such stark measures to regulate virtual assets, cryptocurrency is still one of the most popular investment alternatives for Pakistani citizens.
