But since then, a brutal sell-off followed, marking a 30% drawdown at the time of writing. Meanwhile, broader market price action has seen relative stability over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>Digging deeper, Ivanov concluded that Alameda Research is responsible for the sell-off. Peak to trough gains from that date comes in at 600% over three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The article included a quote from a Researcher at crypto investment firm Babel named Peter Guo, who posited that this is likely a response to sanctions cutting off traditional monetary channels.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Some people could be rushing into Waves in response to potential economic sanctions and limited traditional payment channels.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although people identify $WAVES as a Russian project, Ivanov said he and $WAVES had cut ties with Russia. While Ivanov did work and study in Russia, he made clear that he is Ukrainian-born.<\/p>\n<p>Giving his take on the $WAVES price pump, Ivanov dismissed the Russian invasion as a factor. Instead, he attributed the spike to announcements for the year ahead made a few weeks prior, particularly the launch of a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sasha35625\/status\/1510589955696959494\">U.S subsidiary firm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any connection between the situation in Russia and the current market action around Waves.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Why does Ivanov think Alameda Research is targeting $WAVES?<\/h2>\n<p>It was the first half of March, as $WAVES was beginning its ascent, that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sasha35625\/status\/1510589958372962311\">Ivanov<\/a> said he noticed a campaign of &#8220;sour people&#8221; bad-mouthing the project.<\/p>\n<p>Ivanov <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sasha35625\/status\/1510589972625367042\">claims<\/a> someone, via the Vires Finance lending and borrowing platform, had contacted him to borrow one million $WAVES. He assumed this would be used for shorting the token.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ivanov turned down the request as it's company policy not to sell or lend $WAVES. Further digging on who could be behind this revealed an address beginning <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">3PHkZUJ<\/span>, which Ivanov claims is held by Alameda Research.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">But the thing is we never sell  (or lend for selling) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?q=%24waves&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$waves<\/a> \ud83d\ude42 So I started searching on Vires for who could borrow it there. And look who I found &#8211; <br \/>email: info@alameda-research.com verified<br \/>address: 3PHkZUJpS3AfmnXBNLCBmpqL25GJZb1hGiE <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9XPYxu3nm1\">pic.twitter.com\/9XPYxu3nm1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sasha.waves (@sasha35625) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sasha35625\/status\/1510589978073604103?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This account has a pattern of activity that consists of sending borrowed $WAVES to Binance to sell, thus depressing the price.<\/p>\n<p>Alameda Research and FTX CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SBF_FTX\/status\/1510685533705547783\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a> did not go into a detailed reply,\u00a0 and only made a simple tweet in response:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">obv bullshit conspiracy theory<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; SBF (@SBF_FTX) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SBF_FTX\/status\/1510685533705547783?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>All the same, it's not the first time Alameda Research has been accused of questionable practices. An article posted on Substack in 2021 accused the firm, along with Cumberland Global, of being crypto insiders colluding to pump the Bitcoin price via Tether.<\/p>\n<p>Since this incident blew up, a protocol change <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/why-some-people-are-saying-waves-is-a-ponzi-scheme\/\">proposal<\/a> has been submitted to Vires Finance to reduce the liquidation threshold and increase the APR paid by borrowers &#8211; making borrowing $WAVES an unattractive deal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In order to prevent price manipulation and protect the ecosystem I propose to temporary reduce the liquidation threshold for Waves and USDN borrowing to 0.1%.
