{"id":231995,"date":"2022-04-13T15:45:29","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T14:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=231995"},"modified":"2022-04-13T14:26:35","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T13:26:35","slug":"ethereum-wallet-buys-400k-worth-of-tokens-24-hours-before-their-coinbase-listing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-wallet-buys-400k-worth-of-tokens-24-hours-before-their-coinbase-listing\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethereum wallet buys $400K worth of tokens 24-hours before their Coinbase listing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has announced that it's considering listing new tokens on its platform, but that's not the news; popular crypto guy Cobie<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0discovered an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> address that bought roughly $400,000 worth of the listed tokens 24 hours before the exchange's announcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Found an ETH address that bought hundreds of thousands of dollars of tokens exclusively featured in the Coinbase Asset Listing post about 24 hours before it was published, rofl <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5QlVTjl0Jp\">pic.twitter.com\/5QlVTjl0Jp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Cobie (@cobie) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cobie\/status\/1513874972552355846?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><b>Insider trading or luck?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wallet in question completed all of its purchases roughly 3 minutes before Coinbase made its announcement. Although it is impossible to tell if the person had insider knowledge, the fact that it only bought tokens that were going to be listed has given rise to suspicion among the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the public announcement, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-deviously-profits-from-its-coin-listings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value of the tokens rose<\/span><\/a>, which is not<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surprising as the initial listing on Coinbase tends to pump the token value if only for a short time. The tokens bought by the wallet are now worth $572,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tokens in question are Indexed (NDX), DappRadar (RADAR), Kromatika (KROM), Paper (PAPER), DFX Token (DFX), and RAC (RAC). The wallet spent a large amount on each token, which points to a strategic investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It bought $80,535.75 of NDX, $76,834.86 of KROM, $73,532.71 of RADAR, $72,107.32 of RAC, $60,074.86 of DFX, and $27,049.36 of PAPER. All these transactions happened within 11 hours before the announcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, Coinbase recently said in a blog post that &#8220;it plans to regularly reveal which digital assets are currently &#8220;under consideration&#8221; for listing on its platform ahead of time&#8221; in an effort to prevent pump and dump schemes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Insider trading in NFTs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, OpenSea <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/opensea-exec-nate-chastain-quits-after-allegedly-trading-nfts-on-insider-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirmed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that one of its employees was using burner wallets to buy NFTs before they were publicly listed. He would then flip them later for a profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, 2022 has seen several suspicious incidents related to insider trading in the NFT sector. For example, when Yuga Labs acquired Meebits and CryptoPunks IP rights in March, there were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/yuga-labs-acquisition-of-meebits-nft-ip-reopen-talks-of-market-manipulation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rumors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about possible insider trading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFT Ethics on Twitter called out several people for buying multiple Meebits NFTs just before Yuga Labs announced the deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few weeks later, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/son-of-a-billionaire-buys-insider-nfts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speculation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerged that Alexander Arnault might have had insider information when he placed bids for the rarest HypeBears NFTs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insider trading in NFT and the general crypto space is not technically &#8220;illegal&#8221; as it is largely unregulated, but it is still considered highly unethical.
