{"id":243420,"date":"2022-06-15T16:37:12","date_gmt":"2022-06-15T15:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=243420"},"modified":"2022-06-15T18:13:52","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T17:13:52","slug":"microstrategy-denies-receiving-a-margin-call-against-205m-btc-backed-loan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/microstrategy-denies-receiving-a-margin-call-against-205m-btc-backed-loan\/","title":{"rendered":"MicroStrategy denies receiving a margin call against $205M BTC-backed loan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business intelligence company <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/microstrategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MicroStrategy<\/a> claims it has not received a margin call against the $205 million Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a>)-backed loan it took in March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/bitcoin-nears-microstrategy-margin-call-price-2022-06-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>MicroStrategy took the loan in question from Silvergate Capital and used 19,466 BTC as collateral. In a May webcast, MicroStrategy's President, Phong Le, said BTC plunging beyond $21,000 would trigger a margin call.<\/p>\n<p>A margin call is a situation wherein an investor &#8211; in this case, MicroStrategy &#8211; has to commit more assets to prevent losses on a trade made with borrowed funds.<\/p>\n<p>BTC briefly plunged below $21,000 on Tuesday, trading as low as $20,816.36 before correcting upwards and closing the day above $22,000. Although BTC only breached $21,000 momentarily, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/14\/bitcoin-plunge-spells-trouble-for-michael-saylors-microstrategy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investors got spooked<\/a>, thinking MicroStrategy would have to sell some of its BTC holdings or liquidate the loan's collateral if it received a margin call.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, BTC is trading at $20,590.69 after losing 9.69% in the past 24 hours. This price drop revives fears of the company receiving a margin call over its BTC collateralized loan.<\/p>\n<h2>MicroStrategy can withstand BTC\u2019s volatility<\/h2>\n<p>Assuring investors of its capabilities to handle BTC's volatility, MicroStrategy emailed Reuters, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We can always contribute additional bitcoins to maintain the required loan-to-value ratio. Even at current prices, we continue to maintain more than sufficient additional unpledged bitcoins to meet our requirements under the loan agreement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor also took to Twitter yesterday, reassuring investors that the firm\u2019s BTC strategy can stand the test of time.<\/p>\n<p>Saylor noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MicroStrategy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MicroStrategy<\/a> adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bitcoin?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Bitcoin<\/a> Strategy, it anticipated volatility and structured its balance sheet so that it could continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HODL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HODL<\/a> through adversity. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rPSUVPHUVw\">https:\/\/t.co\/rPSUVPHUVw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Michael Saylor\u26a1\ufe0f (@saylor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/saylor\/status\/1536695409648836609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Prior to this, the BTC maximalist said MicroStrategy needs to maintain $410 million as collateral for the loan. He added that the company could pledge 115,109 BTC to this cause. Should BTC fall below $3,562, Saylor said MicroStrategy could still post some other collateral.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">MicroStrategy has a $205M term loan and needs to maintain $410M as collateral. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24MSTR&src=ctag&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$MSTR<\/a> has 115,109 BTC that it can pledge.
