{"id":243826,"date":"2022-06-17T01:20:24","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T00:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=243826"},"modified":"2022-06-21T03:19:22","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T02:19:22","slug":"texas-new-jersey-and-alabama-havae-launched-an-investigation-into-celsius-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/texas-new-jersey-and-alabama-havae-launched-an-investigation-into-celsius-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas, New Jersey, Alabama and other US states have launched an investigation into Celsius Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The move by Celsius Network (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/celsius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CEL<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) to\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/celsius-pauses-withdrawals-amid-market-turmoil-triggering-74-drop-in-cel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">block consumer withdrawals<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is being looked at\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/06\/16\/crypto-lender-celsius-decision-to-halt-withdrawals-being-probed-by-texas-and-other-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">by several US jurisdictions<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, including the states of Texas, New Jersey, and Alabama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The cryptocurrency lending platform said in a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.celsius.network\/a-memo-to-the-celsius-community-59532a06ecc6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that it would temporarily halt withdrawals and its swap and transfer products on June 12, citing &#8220;extreme market circumstances&#8221; as the reason for the decision. Celsius said that doing this would put them &#8220;in a better position to honor, over time, its withdrawal obligations.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Massive market sell-offs were brought on by rumors that the corporation was about to go bankrupt, which <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/celsius-users-share-harrowing-posts-as-withdrawal-freeze-extends-to-fourth-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">quickly circulated over social media<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Joseph Borg, the director of the Alabama Securities Commission, confirmed that his agency, along with those of Texas, New Jersey, and Kentucky, is conducting an investigation into the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> He stated that although the probe is still in its early stages, Celsius has responded to the inspectors' inquiries. Borg continued by saying that the United States Securities and Exchange Commission has also been in touch with Celsius.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Operating in a grey area<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In September, Celsius was issued a stop and desist order by authorities in the states of Kentucky, New Jersey, and Texas. The officials said that Celsius's interest-bearing products need to be registered as securities. In February, the SEC and those same state authorities levied a fine of $100 million on BlockFi for the company's failure to register its cryptocurrency lending product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Celsius operates in a manner that is comparable to that of a bank in that it collects cryptocurrency deposits from retail clients and invests those funds in a market that is similar to the wholesale cryptocurrency market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These investments may be made in &#8220;decentralized finance,&#8221; often known as &#8220;Defi,&#8221; which refers to websites that utilize blockchain technology to provide services such as loans and insurance outside the conventional financial sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Earlier this month, Celsius <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/celsius-cel-price-spikes-500-in-30-minutes-before-crashing-down-75\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">pumped over 500%<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0within 5 minutes amongst its liquidity issues. The company also\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/celsius-hires-restructuring-lawyers-to-help-ease-its-financial-woes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hired restructuring lawyers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to help them with their liquidity problems earlier this week.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The move by Celsius Network (CEL) to\u00a0block consumer withdrawals\u00a0is being looked at\u00a0by several US jurisdictions, including the states of Texas, New Jersey, and Alabama.
