{"id":244739,"date":"2022-06-22T16:28:46","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T15:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=244739"},"modified":"2022-06-22T17:10:12","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T16:10:12","slug":"tether-to-launch-new-stablecoin-token-pegged-to-british-pound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-to-launch-new-stablecoin-token-pegged-to-british-pound\/","title":{"rendered":"Tether to launch new stablecoin token pegged to British pound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/en\/tether-to-launch-gbpt-tether-tokens-pegged-to-the-british-pound-sterling\/\">Tether<\/a>, the issuer of the biggest dollar-pegged stablecoin, said it plans to expand its product lineup to include a new pound-pegged token.<\/p>\n<h2>Tether to launch GBP\u20ae<\/h2>\n<p>The addition of GBP\u20ae will increase Tether's product offerings to five in total, including the U.S. dollar-pegged USD\u20ae, the euro-pegged EUR\u20ae, the yuan-pegged CNH\u20ae, and the Mexican peso-pegged MXN\u20ae stablecoins.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, GBP\u20ae will be 1:1 pegged to the pound and run on the Ethereum chain. An early July launch date is given.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting, Tether's CTO <a href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/en\/tether-to-launch-gbpt-tether-tokens-pegged-to-the-british-pound-sterling\/\">Paolo Ardoino<\/a> said the firm is &#8220;ready and willing&#8221; to cooperate with U.K regulators to make this a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Ardoino further added that the U.K is poised to become &#8220;the next frontier for blockchain innovation.&#8221; With that, GBP\u20ae can aid this drive by giving users access to a pound-pegged stablecoin from the biggest name in the stablecoin market.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We believe that the United Kingdom is the next frontier for blockchain innovation and the wider implementation of cryptocurrency for financial markets. We hope to help lead this innovation by providing cryptocurrency users worldwide with access to a GBP-denominated stablecoin issued by the largest stablecoin issuer.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The U.K wants to become a crypto hub<\/h2>\n<p>On Tuesday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/the-u-k-makes-a-turnaround-on-kyc-rule\/\">U.K Treasury<\/a> announced it will rescind plans to require crypto firms to collect personal information on transfers made to &#8220;unhosted wallets.&#8221; The report acknowledged concerns to do with privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the international standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which call for such a requirement, the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/1004603\/210720_SI_Consultation_Document_final.pdf\">Treasury report<\/a> stated the issue is &#8220;low risk&#8221; and &#8220;disproportionate&#8221; to the international money laundering regulations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"page50R_mcid9\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8220;Sectors, or<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sub<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sectors, may also be removed from scope of assessments<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">show they <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">represent low risk to the extent that inclusion under the MLRs becomes<\/span> <span class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"highlight selected appended\">dispro<\/span>portionate.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since April 4, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/why-does-the-uk-suddenly-want-to-become-a-crypto-hub-hint-it-has-to-do-with-the-eu\/\">U.K government<\/a> has signaled its intent to become a crypto-friendly jurisdiction. In a tweet commenting on stablecoins, U.K Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RishiSunak\/status\/1510988474215772162\">Rishi Sunak<\/a> spoke of &#8220;the potential of this technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">&#8220;By recognising the potential of this technology and regulating it, we can ensure financial stability and provide wider consumer payment choice.&#8221; <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sunak's plans also included legislating for a financial sandbox to test market innovations, developing an engagement group providing an interface between the crypto industry and government, and examining tax rules for greater competitiveness in this area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tether, the issuer of the biggest dollar-pegged stablecoin, said it plans to expand its product lineup to include a new pound-pegged token.
