The Layer-1 blockchain, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harmonyprotocol\/status\/1540904433525088256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1540904433525088256%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcryptoslate.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D245380action%3Dedit\">announced<\/a> on June 26 that it is offering a $1 million bounty for its recovery.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We commit to a $1M bounty for the return of Horizon bridge funds and sharing exploit information. <\/p>\n<p>Contact us at whitehat@harmony.one or ETH address 0xd6ddd996b2d5b7db22306654fd548ba2a58693ac. <\/p>\n<p>Harmony will advocate for no criminal charges when funds are returned.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Harmony \ud83d\udc99 (@harmonyprotocol) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harmonyprotocol\/status\/1540904433525088256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 26, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This announcement follows a similar pattern adopted by crypto institutions that suffer exploits to attempt a recovery of stolen funds.<\/p>\n<p>Harmony earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harmonyprotocol\/status\/1540110924400324608?s=20&t=oY78LI0ZgaNAKtB7eyDKXQ\">stated<\/a> that it had &#8220;begun working with national authorities and forensic specialists to identify the culprit and retrieve the stolen funds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement of the bounty is perhaps a further attempt to encourage the hacker to return the proceeds of the exploit. However, Harmony stated that it &#8220;will advocate for no criminal charges when funds are returned.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Is recovery possible?<\/h2>\n<p>The Horizon bridge attack adds to a growing list of cross-chain bridges in 2022 and is one of the biggest yet. However, the all-important question remains whether Harmony could recover the stolen funds.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in June, Optimism Foundation was able to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/optimism-hacker-confirms-they-are-whitehat-returns-most-of-stolen-funds\/\">recover<\/a> funds stolen in a hack that led to the loss of 20 million Optimism (OP) tokens.\u00a0 The Foundation revealed the hacker to be a whitehat, an ethical security hacker. Additionally, the hacker kept 2 million tokens as a bounty.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Poly Network suffered a $610 million exploit in August 2021 and it announced a $500,000 bounty for its recovery.\u00a0 As was in Optimism's case, the hacker <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/poly-network-hacker-returns-over-260-million-after-defi-heist\/\">returned<\/a> the stolen and even scored a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/the-poly-network-hacker-just-got-offered-a-job-by-poly-network\/\">job offer<\/a> from Poly Network.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, cross-chain bridges, Wormhole and Ronin, were not able to recover the proceeds of exploits on their bridges.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Harmony's native ONE token slumped on the news of the hack but has slightly recovered.
