{"id":420185,"date":"2024-05-20T20:53:34","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T19:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=420185"},"modified":"2024-05-20T20:53:34","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T19:53:34","slug":"kraken-denies-plans-to-delist-usdt-in-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/kraken-denies-plans-to-delist-usdt-in-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Kraken denies plans to delist USDT in EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/kraken\/\">Kraken<\/a> executive denied the exchange plans to delist Tether's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">USDT<\/a> stablecoin in Europe on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/marklg\/status\/1791912544216433004?t=VN2eO97YZQMKOw1aKvywWA\">May 18<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Global Head of Asset Growth & Management Business Mark Greenberg said the company is examining &#8220;<span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">all options to offer USDT under the upcoming regime.<\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Greenberg added that the company will follow all legal requirements, including rules that it opposes, and asserted that the rules have not been finalized.<\/p>\n<p>The company's plans to maintain its offerings extend beyond USDT. Greenberg said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221; &#8230; We continue to do everything we can to continue to offer all relevant stablecoins to our European customers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Greenberg did not name the regulations in question. However, the relevant regulatory regime is the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA), which will take effect in July. MiCA requires fiat-backed stablecoin issuers to register as electronic money institutions (EMIs) and satisfy other requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Greenberg added that Kraken is working to relist certain coins delisted in Germany. He did not specify the coins.<\/p>\n<h2>Earlier statements<\/h2>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/kraken-considers-delisting-usdt-in-europe-due-to-mica-rules\/\">May 17,<\/a> Bloomberg suggested Kraken could delist USDT in the EU based on statements from Kraken Global Head of Regulatory Strategy Marcus Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Hughes said the exchange could face circumstances where it is &#8220;not tenable to list specific tokens such as USDT&#8221; in the EU. He also warned that MiCA could more broadly reduce the number of stablecoins and types of stablecoins available in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Bloomberg's report, The Block cited a Kraken spokesperson who denied any plans to delist or alter USDT trading pairs. The spokesperson nevertheless acknowledged the firm is &#8220;<span data-v-f87c67ca=\"\">constantly evaluating [its] global strategy and operations<\/span>&#8221; for compliance.<\/p>\n<p>USDT issuer Tether also told Bloomberg that it expects EU exchanges to maintain their USDT trading pairs amidst the changing regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Another exchange, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/okx\/\">OKX<\/a>, has <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/okx-removes-usdt-pairs-in-europe-as-new-stablecoin-regulations-loom\/\">delisted USDT in Europe<\/a> but plans to continue listing USDC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Kraken executive denied the exchange plans to delist Tether&#8217;s USDT stablecoin in Europe on May 18.
