{"id":441943,"date":"2024-09-03T23:00:23","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T22:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=441943"},"modified":"2024-09-03T22:16:41","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T21:16:41","slug":"wazirx-begins-second-phase-of-fiat-withdrawals-early-hackers-begins-moving-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wazirx-begins-second-phase-of-fiat-withdrawals-early-hackers-begins-moving-funds\/","title":{"rendered":"WazirX begins second phase of fiat withdrawals early, hackers begins moving funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/wazirx\/\">WazirX<\/a> has begun the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wazirx-to-resume-phased-fiat-withdrawals-after-235m-hack\/\">second phase<\/a> of its fiat currency withdrawal process ahead of schedule on Sept. 3.<\/p>\n<p>The process was originally slated to begin on Sept. 9 and comes as the exchange faces the aftermath of a major security breach that resulted in the theft of over $230 million in user assets.<\/p>\n<p>CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/nischal-shetty\/\">Nishal Shetty<\/a> shared the update on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NischalShetty\/status\/1830807650017149394\">social media<\/a> and said the exchange is continuing to do all it can to restore access to customer funds.<\/p>\n<h2>Early withdrawal access<\/h2>\n<p>For now, users can <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wazirx-ceo-advises-withdrawals-amid-ownership-dispute-and-hack-aftermath\/\">withdraw up to 66%<\/a> of the total INR amount deposited on the exchange, with the remaining amount to be unlocked sometime in the future.\u00a0The early withdrawal access is a significant step as WazirX undergoes a restructuring process in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange has been grappling with the consequences of a security breach in July, where a hacker exploited a vulnerability in one of its multisig wallets, leading to the loss of significant assets, including $100 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/shiba-inu\/\">Shiba Inu<\/a> (SHIB) and $52 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> (ETH).<\/p>\n<p>The hack forced the exchange to suspend its operations and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wazirx-embarks-on-30-day-moratorium-as-rival-seeks-to-recover-around-10-million-in-stuck-funds\/\">pursue restructuring<\/a> to try and make users whole. However, legal advisers have indicated that customers are unlikely to recover the full amount of their lost funds.<\/p>\n<p>The best-case scenario is projected to be a return of between 55% and 57% of the original assets. The restructuring process aims to address these liabilities, but the road ahead remains uncertain for many affected users.<\/p>\n<h2>Hacker moves funds<\/h2>\n<p>In a parallel development, the hacker responsible for the breach started moving the stolen Ether through crypto mixer <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tornado-cash\/\">Tornado Cash<\/a> on Sept. 2, based on Arkham Intelligence data.<\/p>\n<p>The move involved nearly $6.5 million worth of Ether being transferred in 16 transactions on the Ethereum network.\u00a0The hacker's address, which holds over $155 million in various tokens, had not previously moved funds to Tornado Cash, making this a notable development in the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on WazirX is believed to be the work of the North Korean hacking group Lazarus, notorious for laundering over $1 billion in stolen funds.
