{"id":468821,"date":"2025-03-07T20:21:58","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T20:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=468821"},"modified":"2025-03-07T20:30:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T20:30:32","slug":"david-sacks-says-market-reading-too-much-into-trump-mentioning-altcoins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/david-sacks-says-market-reading-too-much-into-trump-mentioning-altcoins\/","title":{"rendered":"David Sacks says market \u2018reading too much\u2019 into Trump mentioning altcoins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White House \u201cCrypto Czar\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/david-sacks\/\">David Sacks<\/a> said the market is \u201creading a little bit too much\u201d into President <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> mention of Solana (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/solana\/\">SOL<\/a>), Cardano (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/cardano\/\">ADA<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/xrp\/\">XRP<\/a> for the US Digital Asset Stockpile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During an interview with Bloomberg Technology, Sacks said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;The President just mentioned the top five cryptocurrencies by market cap. So I think people are just reading into this a little bit too much, he just mentioned the top five.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also revealed that the stockpile includes measures to stake or sell the altcoins held in it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Altcoin audit<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacks said the US government will audit its crypto holdings and check which altcoins are stored with the authorities. After sorting the altcoin amounts, the government will move every coin besides Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) to the Stockpile for safekeeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacks estimated that the US currently holds roughly 200,000 BTC and some Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>), but he is unsure about the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 2, Trump mentioned SOL, ADA, and XRP when discussing creating a \u201cCrypto Strategic Reserve.\u201d It formally became the US Digital Asset Stockpile on March 6, when the President<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/trumps-signs-bitcoin-reserve-order-but-wont-buy-more-for-now\/\">signed an executive order<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the matter while simultaneously creating a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Staking and rebalancing\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacks highlighted that Scott Bessent, Secretary of the US Treasury, will then exercise \u201cresponsible stewardship\u201d over the altcoins held by the Stockpile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes discretion to rebalance the altcoin portfolio in the best interest of US citizens and potentially staking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacks explained:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;The Secretary of the Treasury and his team will be able to exercise portfolio management and responsible stewardship. And yes, that could include staking, it could include rebalancing, it could include sales.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he clarified that this rationale will not be applied to the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reserve consists of Bitcoin seized through criminal and civil forfeiture, preventing its sale, and Sacks said the US wants a long-term strategy to maximize the value of its BTC holdings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While highlighting that the US sees Bitcoin as \u201cscarce, valuable, and strategic to hold\u201d as a long-term reserve asset, he said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;The Bitcoin we want to keep long-term, so there is a difference there in objective.
