{"id":497236,"date":"2025-09-08T03:00:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T02:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=497236"},"modified":"2025-09-07T21:58:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T20:58:31","slug":"tether-ceo-refutes-claims-that-the-firm-sold-bitcoin-and-bought-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-ceo-refutes-claims-that-the-firm-sold-bitcoin-and-bought-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"Tether CEO refutes claims that the firm sold Bitcoin and bought gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paolo Ardoino, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/tether\/\">Tether<\/a>, the issuer of the largest stablecoin <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">USDT<\/a>, took to X on Sunday to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/paoloardoino\/status\/1964655589298225416?s=46\">refute<\/a> claims about the firm selling its Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) to invest in gold. In his post, Ardoino wrote that \u201cTether didn't sell any Bitcoin,\u201d adding that:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the world continues to get darker, Tether will continue to invest part of its profits into safe assets like Bitcoin, Gold and Land.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How the rumor started<\/h2>\n<p>On Sept. 6, YouTuber Clive Thompson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=94JYdZ53jTI\">claimed<\/a> that \u201crecently, Tether has been buying gold and selling Bitcoin.\u201d Thompson\u2019s assertion was based on an examination of Tether\u2019s statements of assets.<\/p>\n<p>According to Thompson, Tether sold over $1 billion BTC and purchased over $1.6 billion gold in the last quarter. This indicates that Tether is dumping Bitcoin in favor of gold, as per Thompson.<\/p>\n<h2>Flaws in Thompson\u2019s claims<\/h2>\n<p>Jan3 CEO Samson Mow pointed out flaws in Thompson\u2019s theory based on public data. In an X <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Excellion\/status\/1964541251510010068\">post<\/a>, Mow explained that Thompson arrived at the wrong conclusion since he assumed that a fall in BTC holdings of Tether automatically meant they sold it for gold.<\/p>\n<p>In the first and second quarter of this year, Tether reported holdings of 92,650 BTC and 83,274 BTC respectively. According to Mow, Thompson forgot to factor in Tether\u2019s funding of a separate project called Twenty One Capital (XXI). Tether transferred 14,000 BTC on June 2 and 5,800 BTC in July, sending a total of 19,800 BTC to XXI.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Mow explained that Tether had 4,624 BTC more in Q2 2025 than the previous quarter. Accounting for July\u2019s transfer, Tether \u201chas (at least) a net increase in Bitcoin holdings of 10,424 BTC,\u201d Mow wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, Mow dismissed Thompson\u2019s claim as \u201cfalse\u201d and labeled it a \u201cdesperate\u201d attempt to create bearish news surrounding Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<h2>Tether\u2019s deepening relationship with Gold<\/h2>\n<p>The latest development surrounding Tether comes just days after the company announced that it\u2019s looking into <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-eyes-deeper-dive-into-gold-with-new-100-million-investment-amid-market-boom\/\">investing in gold mining firms<\/a>. But Tether has been diversifying into gold for a while.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the stablecoin issuer <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-amplifies-gold-strategy-with-around-90-million-stake-in-gold-royalties-company\/\">spent $90 million<\/a> to acquire a substantial stake in a company specializing in gold royalties. Earlier this week, Tether announced that it will pour another $100 million into the same firm\u2014Elemental Altus Royalties Corp.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Tether issues the gold-backed stablecoin Tether Gold (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether-gold\/\">XAUT<\/a>)\u2014XAUT is backed by about <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-holds-8-billion-worth-of-gold-in-swiss-vault-matching-ubs-exposure\/\">7.66 tons of gold<\/a> stored in Switzerland.
