Method<\/h2>\n

We analyzed the digital artifact known as Bitcoin using what we identified as block headers<\/strong> (timestamp, target \/ \u201cbits\u201d, version) and each block\u2019s coinbase transaction<\/strong> (height, output value, and tag text).<\/p>\n

From our previous initial review we've constructed the following data points:<\/p>\n

  • Evidence of tip contention<\/strong> (stale blocks) was inferred<\/strong> from timing irregularities and MTP edge effects; where any stale-block archives<\/strong> survived on isolated nodes, they corroborated those periods.<\/li>\n
  • Difficulty retargets occurred every 2016 blocks<\/strong> with the actual_timespan<\/strong> clamped to 0.25\u00d7\u20134\u00d7 of the two-week target, implying a per-epoch difficulty change bounded to at most 4\u00d7<\/strong> in either direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Findings<\/h2>\n

    Cessation of payments<\/h3>\n

    We recorded \u0394H (blocks before present) to be \u2248 86,000. Coinbase outputs were equal to the programmed subsidy, implying fees \u2248 0<\/strong>. Over that same interval, average block spacing settled near ~60\u201370 minutes<\/strong> with a long-segment mean of ~65 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Power-source timing signatures<\/h3>\n

    Post-collapse block arrivals were not memoryless. Diurnal and seasonal cadence encoded the unattended power mix:<\/p>\n

    • Daytime clusters with nighttime gaps<\/strong> repeated across low-latitude longitudes \u2192 unattended solar<\/strong> with degrading storage.<\/li>\n

        Where residual hashrate was \u22481%<\/strong> of pre-event, Terrace A alone spanned ~3.8 years<\/strong> at ~16.7 h\/block. At \u22480.1%<\/strong>, the same 2016-block epoch would have stretched to ~38 years<\/strong> at ~167 h\/block, still within the protocol\u2019s adjustment bound. One region\u2019s cadence matched the ~16\u201317 h\/block case.<\/p>\n

        How to read a terrace (worked calc):<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Epoch length = 2016 blocks. If the observed interval on a plateau is 16.7 hours, elapsed time for that epoch \u2248 2016 \u00d7 16.7 h \u2248 3.84 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Network decay captured in the record<\/h3>\n

        Once accurate clocks vanished, miner timestamps drifted<\/strong> in coherent regional patterns. Bitcoin\u2019s MTP<\/strong> rule limited abuse of timestamps (each new block had to be later than the median of the prior 11) but did not eliminate drift signatures.<\/p>\n

        Interval variance and clustered MTP-bounded timestamp advances revealed intermittent partitions<\/strong> and tip contention<\/strong>; when any link resumed (e.g., satellite, microwave), competing branches reconciled and only the winning branch remained canonical.<\/p>\n

        Without preserved stale-block archives, measured contention is a lower bound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Maker marks that outlived their makers<\/h3>\n

        Coinbase tag strings<\/strong> (pool labels) and stable nonce\/version<\/strong> fingerprints persisted for years after fee activity ended. Defaults were never changed once operators were gone, leaving software\/hardware families<\/strong> identifiable in the record. (Coinbase tags are visible via the coinbase transaction; headers alone do not carry them.)<\/p>\n
