According to UBS, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/research\/the-world-s-100-largest-banks\">largest<\/a> Swiss banking institution in the world, this prophecy won\u2019t come to light any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>In a research report distributed to clients in more than 50 countries, UBS stated that Bitcoin is too volatile and technologically limited to become a standardized currency. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/crypto\">Bloomberg<\/a>, the report states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our findings suggest that Bitcoin, in its current form, is too unstable and limited to become a viable means of payment for global transactions or a mainstream asset class.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>UBS does not rule out the possibility of a world dominated by Bitcoin, however.<\/p>\n<p>To dethrone the greenback, Bitcoin would have to reach $213,000 per token or make inordinate improvements in scalability, according to the Swiss multinational.<\/p>\n<h2>Volatility<\/h2>\n<p>UBS \u2014 a 156-year-old financial institution \u2014 may view Bitcoin through the lens of classical economics. Traditionally, assets with small market capitalization are viewed as riskier investments \u2014 and when compared to gold, stocks, or other assets, Bitcoin\u2019s $128.8 billion market cap may be viewed by financial titans as a proverbial pipsqueak.<\/p>\n<p>With larger access to capital, higher trading liquidity, and more transparency, a larger market capitalization could potentially erase the bulk of Bitcoin\u2019s price volatility. To dethrone the greenback, UBS believes Bitcoin would have to reach the lofty figure of $213,000 per unit.<\/p>\n<p>Such a valuation would put Bitcoin\u2019s market cap at roughly $3.66 trillion \u2014 more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/faqs\/currency_12773.htm\">double<\/a> the $1.67 trillion of USD cash in circulation as of June 2018.<\/p>\n<h2>Scalability<\/h2>\n<p>Processing a maximum of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bitcoin.it\/wiki\/Maximum_transaction_rate\">10.7<\/a> transactions per second, Bitcoin\u2019s notorious \u2018bottleneck\u2019 may have become synonymous with the search for blockchain scalability.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts to upgrade Bitcoin\u2019s technological capabilities have been plentiful \u2014 ranging from second layer solutions such as Lightning Network to hard forks optimized for faster and cheaper transactions (Bitcoin Cash).<\/p>\n<p>To UBS strategist Joni Teves, however, these attempts have been \u201cinsufficient\u201d to resolve the network\u2019s scalability \u2014 presumably comparing Bitcoin\u2019s speed to standardized payment processors such as Visa, which can handle thousands of transactions per second.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/08\/02\/bitcoin-still-too-unstable-to-be-mainstream-money-ubs-says.html\">CNBC<\/a>, she told UBS investors:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bitcoin cannot handle the volume of transactions processed by mechanisms being used in the real world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Having previously described Bitcoin as a \u201cspeculative bubble\u201d, UBS\u2019 latest comments seem atypical of a centuries-old financial institution.
