On Sept. 4, Iran legitimized cryptocurrency mining as an industry\u2013propelling local <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> prices to new, record highs.<\/p>\n<h2>Crypto Industry Gains Global Traction in Legitimization<\/h2>\n<p>The Iranian government has accepted cryptocurrency mining as an industry and is now developing a regulatory framework for the sector, reports Iranian news agency\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.ibena.ir\/news\/90849\/Iran-Government-Accepts-Cryptocurrency-Mining-as-Industry\">IBENA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following news of the formal approval, Bitcoin (BTC) rallied to a record high of 1,020,000,000 Iranian rials (~$24,000 USD) on local cryptocurrency exchange Exir. BTC traded at approximately $7,000 on major cryptocurrency exchanges during the same period on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-market-chaos-crypto-community-quick-to-blame-goldman-sachs-silk-road-bitcoin-liquidation-more-likely\/\">Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Price of BTC is nearly at its all time high in Iranian local currency. According to IBENA,\u00a0Firouzabadi supports the launch of a national cryptocurrency to be used as a financial transaction instrument with foreign trade partners and national allies.<\/p>\n<p>Last November, Firouzabadi told the <a href=\"https:\/\/financialtribune.com\/articles\/economy-business-and-markets\/76776\/iran-welcomes-cryptocurrencies\">Financial Tribune<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe [at the SCC] welcome Bitcoin, but we must have regulations for Bitcoin and any other digital currency. Studies are necessary for considering a new currency.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other government organizations have already accepted the Council's decision including\u00a0the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology; the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade; and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance.<\/p>\n<h2>Iran Struggles With US Sanctions<\/h2>\n<p>Amid economic pressures from the U.S., Iran has been struggling to maintain production and sale of its main export, oil.
