They will buy real property, flight tickets, goods, services and save money in our gold, iron, diamond, aluminum and oil-backed cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nicol\u00e1s Maduro (@maduro_en) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maduro_en\/status\/1047141789147250688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 2, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Available for Purchase Next Month<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to Maduro, the cryptocurrency will be available for purchase starting November 5, when Venezuelan residents will be able to exchange the current fiat currency the Bolivar Soberano for Petro. Maduro announced in the new white paper that Petro, now the national cryptocurrency of Venezuela, will include support from gold, diamond, iron, and aluminum crypto-assets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Maduro said in a message posted Monday:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHistoric day for the Homeland. The official international and national launch of PETRO. Guarantee of the prosperity of our beautiful Venezuela for the consolidation of the socialist model for the benefit of our people.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Maduro also created on Monday night an organization to oversee his country\u2019s crypto assets, which he has dubbed the National Superintendency of Cryptoactives and Related Activities, or Sunacrip. President Maduro said in a release that this launch is the start of a ten-year plan involving Petro and that he hopes to use it to stabilize the country\u2019s economy. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Backed by Commodities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The main commodity of Venezuela Maduro is using to back his cryptocurrency seems to be the country\u2019s oil reserves. He said via state media that starting November 5 Venezuelans will be able to register for and participate in Petro, which will be open for the next two months and operate \u201cin two speeds.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People are now reportedly able to exchange bolivars for Petro, and those units of cryptocurrency will be backed by Venezuela\u2019s oil, gold, diamond, iron, and aluminum assets. Holders of Petro will then be able to use their crypto for international transactions. Petro\u2019s API is also available on the site for developers to download. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to Al Jazeera, Venezuela will \u201cpre-mine\u201d the currency and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/02\/venezuela-petro-cryptocurrency-180219065112440.html\"><span class=\"s2\">government will be the one to control it<\/span><\/a>. It has already allocated five billion barrels of oil to back Petro, and the price will be tied to the price of Venezuelan oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the pre-sale period, the Petro is being sold in fiat currency and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. After the presale period, Petro will be available for purchase will bolivars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once residents purchase them, they\u2019ll reportedly be able to buy goods and services at vendors who accept the currency. Government Cryptocurrency Superintendent Carlos Vargas said that \u201cin a short future, Venezuelans can buy in the bakery with the Petro.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether the currency will help the country still remains to be seen.
