The difference between those earnings measures matters. Net income is reported under accounting rules, while adjusted net income and adjusted EBITDA exclude certain items defined in the company’s reporting. Investors should not treat the three figures as interchangeable measures of operating cash generation.
Revenue mix shifts as trading conditions soften
Coinbase said subscription and services accounted for 49% of its net revenue in the quarter ended September 30. That share is notable for a company whose fortunes have historically been closely associated with trading fees and cryptocurrency-market sentiment. It does not mean the exchange is immune to weaker markets, but it suggests more of its income is now linked to custody, stablecoins, subscriptions and other recurring or activity-based services.
The company described the quarter as a softer period for the wider crypto market. Even so, adjusted EBITDA rose 60% from the previous quarter to $333 million, marking what Coinbase called its fifteenth consecutive quarter with positive adjusted EBITDA. These are company-reported, non-GAAP metrics, rather than a substitute for the full financial statements.
For readers following the exchange sector, the question is whether diversification can smooth the ups and downs of trading revenue. A rising percentage from services can help, although stablecoin holdings and loan demand can also change with market conditions and interest rates.
Coinbase says its trading market share reached 10.7%
The exchange reported that its share of global crypto trading volume reached 10.7% in Q3, its fourth consecutive quarter of gains. Coinbase attributed the improvement to growth across both spot and derivatives products, including perpetual contracts, futures and options. The market-share figure is defined by Coinbase and should be read using the methodology in its investor materials, rather than taken as a universal industry ranking.
Assets held on the platform also represented a reported 12.5% of total cryptocurrency market capitalisation. That measure reflects customer assets under custody and trading arrangements, not assets that Coinbase owns. An increase can arise from customer inflows, changes in token prices or shifts in market share, so it is not a direct measure of new cash earnings.
The trading figures provide an important counterweight to the company’s diversification narrative. Coinbase is still competing for order flow and customer relationships in core crypto markets, even as it expands the range of financial products offered through its platform.
USDC and prediction markets become more prominent
Average USDC held in Coinbase products reached $22 billion during the quarter, according to the company, a 49% increase from a year earlier. Coinbase described that as roughly 30% of average USDC market capitalisation and said it had captured approximately half of USDC-related economics over the past year. These are the company’s descriptions of its commercial participation; they should not be confused with ownership of all USDC reserves.
Coinbase also said its prediction-markets business exceeded $200 million in annualised revenue. Annualised is the crucial qualifier: it is an extrapolated run-rate measure, not a declaration that the business booked $200 million in the three-month reporting period. Daily prediction-market traders increased by more than 60% quarter on quarter, the company added.
Paid Coinbase One subscriptions rose 24% year on year, while the average daily loan-book balance was up 74%. Taken together, those figures help explain why management is emphasising a broader customer relationship rather than a single exchange transaction.
What investors should watch next
There are at least three useful tests for Coinbase’s strategy over coming quarters. First, can subscriptions and services maintain their contribution if crypto activity remains subdued? Second, will higher USDC balances translate into resilient net economics as market rates change? Third, can prediction markets and other newer products grow without introducing disproportionate compliance or operational risks?
Coinbase also disclosed that tokenised-stock volume on Base had passed $1 billion since launch, illustrating how trading, payments and onchain financial assets increasingly overlap within its strategy. That volume figure is cumulative rather than a quarterly earnings line, and should be assessed on its own terms.
For now, the result is not simply a story about a profitable exchange. It is a detailed snapshot of how one of the largest US crypto platforms is attempting to become less dependent on crypto trading cycles while retaining a growing share of the activity that remains.
