Bitcoin Near $80,000: Miners Aren’t Getting Richer, They’re Getting More Selective

Bitcoin is once again trading in the $78,000–$80,000 range, with CoinDesk’s market update pegging it at $78,400 on August 31. On the surface, that looks like an obvious win for miners. Underneath, it raises a much less comfortable question: who actually captures that upside?

August did give the industry some breathing room. Following a price uptick and a 1.312% difficulty drop on August 22, hashprice – revenue per unit of computing power – climbed above $39 per PH/s per day, more than 43% above June’s low of roughly $27. But a breather isn’t the same as a recovery. The price went up for everyone; margins only expanded for operators whose cost base was already low.

The illusion of a windfall

Every miner’s top line looks the same: the BTC they mine is worth more. Their bottom line does not: electricity costs, ASIC efficiency, downtime, maintenance, financing, and depreciation all diverge sharply from one operation to the next. A rising price creates operating leverage, but it doesn’t erase the gap between a new rig running on cheap power and an aging fleet on an expensive tariff.

In the headlines, mining looks “profitable” again. In the actual P&L, it’s profitable mainly for those who already absorbed the post-halving pressure. A higher BTC price doesn’t rescue an inefficient fleet if electricity eats the entire payout.

Network difficulty in August sat 15.1% below where it started the year, and industry estimates put roughly 150 EH/s of capacity offline. The operators that stayed online temporarily claimed a larger slice of the total pie – but that effect can’t last indefinitely. After the 1.312% difficulty drop, the public retarget estimator was already pointing to a +0.95% increase at the next adjustment. That’s not a price forecast; it’s a signal that some of the disconnected capacity is preparing to come back.

Five pools found three-quarters of the blocks

There’s a second layer to this story. Over a recent weekly window tracked by mempool.space, the leaderboard looked like this: Foundry USA with 255 blocks, AntPool with 192, F2Pool with 146, SpiderPool with 100, and ViaBTC with 81. Together, those five pools found 774 of 1,028 blocks, 75.29% of the total.

That figure shouldn’t be read as a claim that these five pools own three-quarters of the network’s hashrate. A pool doesn’t necessarily own the machines connected to it, and participants can and do switch. What it measures is concentration in observed block production, not direct ownership of physical hashpower.

Still, when most blocks flow through a handful of large coordinators, the network becomes more exposed to outages, block-template errors, payout delays, centralized fee policy, and contested transaction decisions. There’s an economic dimension too: the more miners join large pools chasing steady payouts, the stronger the network effect becomes – bigger pools gain statistical stability, liquidity, and trust, making it harder for smaller pools to grow their share. That’s a dependency risk on a shrinking set of operators, interfaces, rules, and decision points.

In other words, BTC near $80,000 is a stress test not just for margins, but for the decentralization of mining economics itself. A rally helps efficient operators survive the cycle, but it can simultaneously deepen the network’s reliance on a small number of coordinators. For an individual miner, the practical takeaway is simple: don’t choose a pool by size alone. Compare payout transparency, support quality, connection flexibility, and a provider’s ability to serve farms of different scales.

What to watch next

The next round-number price level isn’t the most important thing to track. Four metrics matter more: the direction of the upcoming difficulty adjustment, the gap between current and forward hashprice, the share of blocks found by the largest pools, and the share of fees within block rewards.

The core takeaway for late summer is this: mining isn’t returning to its old normal. It’s finishing its transformation into a business of electricity, efficiency, and coordination.

BTC near $80,000 gives the industry oxygen, but it doesn’t make the air the same for everyone. For a new fleet on cheap energy, it’s a margin window. For an old fleet on an expensive tariff, it’s a delayed decision. And for the network as a whole, it’s a reminder: the more expensive bitcoin gets, the more carefully participants need to track not just hashrate, but who controls the hashrate’s right to find blocks in the first place.

The real question heading into autumn isn’t whether BTC returns to $100,000. It’s whether price can outrun difficulty and concentration before they claim the upside for themselves.

Why miners should give EMCD a test run

In an environment like this, choosing a pool stops being a formality and becomes part of risk management.

EMCD is built for miners of every scale. Smaller participants need a straightforward onboarding process and human support; larger farms need flexible terms, hashrate control, integration with their own infrastructure, and the ability to discuss custom conditions directly.

Our approach is built on predictable operations, transparent communication, and loyalty to participants – not abrupt, one-sided changes to terms. For a miner, that translates into a clear point of contact, mobile control, and the ability to resolve operational issues before they turn into downtime.

The best way to evaluate EMCD is to test it against your own real hashrate. Connect a portion of your capacity, and compare payout stability, monitoring quality, support response times, and ease of management against your current pool. If the service holds up under your own scrutiny, scaling the switch becomes an easy call.
