What Wirex Card is and How it Works

Wirex Card draws on prepaid fiat or crypto balances. Crypto converts to the spending currency in-app before settlement, with the spread charged during that conversion. That differs from auto-sell cards, which liquidate crypto at the register. The app holds 150+ crypto and fiat assets, and identity verification under Know Your Customer, or KYC, rules is required to open an account.
Wirex is a principal member of Visa and Mastercard, with the card network determined by region. Legacy EEA cards used Mastercard through Transact Payments Malta Limited. Card transactions were paused when the legacy EEA app closed on September 30, 2026. UK and most APAC cards issue on Visa, with Wirex Pte Ltd in Singapore as the APAC issuer.
Who Is Wirex Card For?
Spenders in the UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, or Taiwan who want a low-fee multi-currency debit card and accept rewards paid in WXT get what the marketing describes. Spenders in the EEA or Australia do not. Classic crypto services ended in both regions on June 30, 2026. The legacy EEA app then closed on September 30, with card transactions paused. EEA customers must migrate to Wirex One, whose terms are separate. US and Canada residents cannot open the card at all.
Wirex Card Rewards Mechanics
The realized rate for a free-tier user is 0.5%, paid in WXT. Higher rates require a subscription or locked capital, and some require both.
- Free Standard pays 0.5% at entry and 1% after a WXT lockup.
- Premium costs €9.99/mo and pays 1%, 2% or 3% across its three lockup tiers.
- Elite costs €29.99/mo and pays 4%, 6% or 8% across three lockup tiers. Wirex's X-tras page requires 7,500,000 WXT locked for 180 days to reach 8%, in addition to the subscription.

All Cryptoback pays out in WXT, Wirex's own token, so the value of every reward floats with the WXT price. Fiat and stablecoin cashback carry no such exposure. Per-transaction and monthly caps limit the amount earned.
| X-tras tier | Cryptoback | Per-transaction cap | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard — Entry | 0.5% | 100 WXT | 10,000 WXT |
| Standard — Enhanced | 1% | 250 WXT | 20,000 WXT |
| Premium — Entry | 1% | 250 WXT | 50,000 WXT |
| Premium — Enhanced | 2% | 500 WXT | 75,000 WXT |
| Premium — top tier | 3% | 1,500 WXT | 100,000 WXT |
| Elite — Entry | 4% | 500 WXT | 125,000 WXT |
| Elite — Enhanced | 6% | 3,000 WXT | 200,000 WXT |
| Elite — top tier | 8% | 9,000 WXT | 250,000 WXT |
Cryptoback excludes ATM withdrawals, peer-to-peer transfers, and tax payments. In the EEA and Australia the program ended on Jun. 30, 2026 on the Classic app, and accrued rewards pay out only after an upgrade to Wirex One.
Wirex Card Fees and Pricing
Wirex charges no annual fee or issuance fee and markets 0% FX. Paid reward tiers and the in-app conversion spread add the costs shown below.
Higher Cryptoback tiers require Premium or Elite subscriptions in addition to the conversion spread. Compare the total subscription cost with the rewards available at your spending level.

Wirex Card Limits — Purchase and ATM
The EEA limits below describe the legacy card, whose transactions were paused when the app closed on September 30, 2026. They do not describe Wirex One.
The monthly free-ATM allowance is the relevant cash-withdrawal threshold. Withdrawals above that allowance incur a 2% fee.
Eligibility and Availability — Countries and States
Wirex lists card issuance across about 35 markets. This review scores Classic Wirex with Cryptoback, now operating only in the UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The legacy EEA app closed September 30, 2026, with card transactions paused. EEA customers must migrate to Wirex One. Australia’s Classic crypto services ended June 30, 2026. KYC is required everywhere, with a government ID and a liveness check in some countries.
Restricted Countries
Wirex's regional listing includes the markets below, but its EEA entries describe a program affected by the closure. They do not establish current Classic card availability:
- UK and Europe: United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
- Asia-Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan
- Latin America: Argentina, Brazil
Everywhere else the card is unavailable. The United States gets a Wirex account and crypto account but no card. Wirex exited the US card market and has not returned. Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore show no Wirex service at all. The Philippines and Russia sit on the unavailable list alongside sanctioned countries, and within Europe, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, and Croatia get accounts without a card.
Funding Rails
Wirex accepts top-ups by bank transfer (SEPA, Faster Payments, and regional rails, generally free), open banking for GBP and EUR, debit or credit card with region-dependent fees, or crypto deposit, which is free after network confirmations on the correct network. Because spending converts crypto to fiat in-app, each crypto-funded purchase is a conversion event carrying the spread and, in most jurisdictions, a taxable disposal. In the EEA and Australia, crypto funding on the Classic app ended with the Jun. 30, 2026 shutdown. Legacy EEA app access and card transactions ended or were paused on September 30, 2026. EEA customers must migrate to Wirex One.
Security, Custody, and Freeze Risk
Wirex is custodial and names its regional issuers, including Transact Payments Malta Limited for the EEA Mastercard program and Wirex Pte Ltd for APAC. The Classic-to-Wirex One migration around Jun. 28 to 30, 2026 produced reported balance-transfer failures. Stuck transfers were queued for reprocessing. A cardholder in an affected region should confirm balances and accrued rewards arrived intact before relying on the card. Legacy EEA app access and card transactions ended or were paused on September 30, 2026. EEA customers must migrate to Wirex One.
App, Controls, and Support
The app supports virtual cards, freeze and spend-limit controls, and Apple Pay and Google Pay. Those cover the core self-service needs. Support is standard in-app help, and the live dispute risk in mid-2026 is the Classic-to-Wirex One migration path. Stuck balances or unpaid accrued rewards need migration support, outside the normal chargeback process.
Tax and Record-Keeping
Wirex provides in-app statements and transaction history. Converting crypto into spending currency is a disposal in most jurisdictions, so crypto-funded purchases can create taxable events. Stablecoin funding keeps the gain per disposal near zero, while volatile-crypto funding does not. Export transaction records as you go instead of relying on a year-end summary.

The three closest alternatives to Wirex Card each address a specific gap in the Wirex offering.
| Card | Why Choose It Instead |
|---|---|
| Coinbase Card | US availability; choose your reward coin monthly; no staking or lock requirement |
| Nexo Card | Earn cashback in BTC instead of WXT; dual debit and credit card option for EEA and UK users |
| Crypto.com Visa Card | Broader range of card tiers; CRO-based rewards; available in the US, UK, EEA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Brazil |
Coinbase Card is the clearest replacement for US-based users who cannot access Wirex Card at all. It carries no annual fee, and cardholders can choose their reward coin each month without a staking requirement. Nexo Card targets the same EEA and UK market as Wirex and lets users receive cashback in BTC or NEXO. Choosing BTC avoids receiving rewards in the card platform's own token.
For users who want a broader tier structure and are comfortable holding CRO, Crypto.com Visa Card covers more markets than Wirex and offers a wider range of card levels. The right choice between the three depends on your country, how you want rewards paid out, and whether you already have a balance on any of these platforms.
Final Verdict
Classic Cryptoback remains described for the UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Taiwan. In those markets, Wirex offers free issuance and no annual fee, with a monthly free-ATM allowance. The marketed 0% FX rate still leaves the in-app conversion spread. A free-tier user earns 0.5% in WXT, whose value changes with the token price. Reaching 8% requires the €29.99/mo Elite plan and a multimillion-WXT lockup, subject to a 250,000 WXT monthly cap. That headline rate is a ceiling with substantial conditions. Classic crypto services ended in the EEA and Australia on June 30, 2026. The legacy EEA app then closed on September 30, with card transactions paused. Wirex One has separate terms and undisclosed rates, so the Classic reward schedule cannot price the replacement product. Users in the four remaining Classic markets can assess its travel fees, but EEA and Australian users need to evaluate the migration separately.
